What is the contract ratification vote?

The contract ratification vote is when the union members democratically determine whether or not to accept the terms of the agreement that has been tentatively agreed to by the union’s elected bargaining committee and CSU administration. A simple majority of those voting determines the outcome of the vote.

What are the terms of the tentative agreement that we’re voting on?

When would the changes in this tentative agreement go into effect?  

The contract would go into effect as soon as it is ratified by UAW members and the CSU Board of Trustees. The next CSU Board of Trustees meeting is on November 9 and 10. The retroactive wage increases would take effect on July 1st, 2021, which means that you will receive this as back pay. The exact timing of this back pay depends on CSU’s payroll, but likely in early 2022. The 2021/2022 Academic Year increase of the wage scales will go in effect on January 1, 2022.

What is the duration of the proposed contract?

The duration of the tentative agreement is ~2 years. If ratified and finalized, the new contract will be for almost 2 years, and expire on September 30, 2023. That means that CSU Student Workers will have the opportunity to negotiate a successor contract starting negotiations in Spring 2023.

Why would I vote Yes in the contract ratification vote?

The tentative agreement includes improvements to the existing contract, which only go into effect if members vote yes to approve the new contract.

How long is the vote open? How will we be notified of the results?

The vote will open on Tuesday, October 19 and will close on Tuesday October 26 at 11:59PM. The vote is online, and members will receive an email with the link to vote. CSU Student Workers will be notified via email and on the website of the results on Wednesday, October 27.
